Café Cubano, a family restaurant based in Elmwood Park, IL, will participate at the First Annual Festival Cubano on August 7th and 8th, 2010, at Riis Park (on Fullerton and Narragansett). The event is free. All visitors are encouraged to share in the Cuban tradition, music, and culinary delights.

“We are excited and looking forward to promoting the taste of old Cuba as my father knew it,” said Javier Fernández Jr, owner and head chef of Café Cubano.

All the recipes had come from his father Javier Sr who passed away in 2009, leaving all his knowledge and love for Cuban cooking to his son and family.

The family carries on the Cuban tradition and high standard of authenticity Javier Sr. set in his recipes.

“Dad taught us about his Cuba through his cooking,” said Javier Jr. “These are Dad’s recipes. We cook food the way Dad cooked it.”

And now Chicago will have a chance to taste the unique flavors of old Cuba at the Festival Cubano.

Pawn Broker Versus Stock Broker: Chicago Pawn Shop Reflects the State of the Economy

July 13th, 2010

You can learn a lot about the state of the economy by visiting a pawn shop.  The pawn shop is a true barometer of the economy; just ask Everyman’s Economists Randy and Wayne Cohen, owners of Chicago’s oldest pawn shop group, Royal Jewelers and Loans, www.RoyalPaysCash.com.

Chicago, IL, May 28, 2008 — “Want to know what’s really going on with the economy? Visit a pawn shop,” said Everyman’s economist, Randy Cohen.  “The pawn shop is the commodities exchange of the people.”

It is the last day of the month, and Royal Jewelers and Loans is busy.   Customers are queuing to pawn or sell such valuables as gold, diamonds, fur coats, and iPods.  At times, the line runs the length of the show room.

Randy and his brother, Wayne, own Chicago’s oldest pawn brokerage group.  The business was started in 1900 by their grandfather, and now has three locations, with their flagship store, Royal Jewelers and Loans, at Clark and Congress, in the Loop.

“People talk about micro-finance as if it were a new thing.  But the pawn shop is one of the oldest financial institutions in the world.  Queen Isabella of Spain pawned some of her royal jewels to fund Christopher Columbus’ voyage.  Now over 500 years later and the pawn shop is still the only place where everyone, poor or rich, can get credit,” says Wayne Cohen.

The record price of gold is one more reason people are visiting their local pawn shop.  Today an interesting phenomenon is noticeable: an increasing number of the middle class are making use of the pawn broker’s services. Wayne points out that even those who have never been in a pawn shop are coming to sell their gold, new, old and scrap.  “Buy low, sell high – people know they can make a lot of money right now selling their gold.  So, everyone wants in on the opportunity.”

“When the economy gets tight, you see a surge in the number of people needing short-term loans on their valuables.  Sometimes, even when the Ivy-league economists say that the economy is going down the drain, you don’t see that surge.  That means that many people are still doing O.K.  The pawn shop is the true barometer of the economy,” added Randy.

America’s Oldest Soprano Still Sings at 105 Years Old at Concord Place Retirement and Assisted Living Community, Chicago

February 2nd, 2010

Every day, Lillian Krockenberger sings her favorite songs. While that may not seem like a monumental accomplishment for most people, this soprano turns 105 years old on Feb 3, 2010, and can still hit her high notes.

Lillie, as she is affectionately called, was born in Bad Kreunzach, Germany in 1905. An orphan, she came to Chicago, Illinois in 1921 and worked as a maid and caregiver for a wealthy family. That was when she met her husband, Carl. “He lived two doors down [the street]. He saw me through the window as I walked by his house. He came to me and said, ‘Can I take you to the show?’”

Talking about her husband, Carl, often brings out mischief from Lillie. “My husband was a flirt,” she exclaimed! “Men are flirts. I don’t blame them. They’re built that way,” she added. Looking around the hotel-like retirement home she now calls home, she joked, “Have they got men here?”

Lillie and Carl had two children together, Carl Jr. and Lydia, and seven grandchildren. Though Lillie’s husband and two children have since passed on, her grandchildren remain a big part of her life.

Lillie’s husband, also a musician, played piano and violin. Together they enjoyed entertaining people with music. “I sang wherever I could,” said Lillie.

For the past 20 years, Lillie has lived in the Chicago suburb of Northlake, at Concord Place Retirement and Assisted Living Community (http://www.concordplace.com). “Lillie is a gift to us all,” said Fran Pelegrino, Concord Place Resident Coordinator, who has been one of Lillie’s closest friends for the past 20 years.

“The secret to a long life is to be happy and consider each day a gift,” said Lillie.

This past weekend, Concord Place threw Lillie a party to celebrate her 105th birthday. Among the guests were Lillie’s 103-year-old cousin, Edna, and the mayor of Northlake, IL Jeffrey Sherwin. Mayor Sherwin presented Lillie with a certificate and declared Feb 3 as Lillian Krockenberger Day.

Chicago’s oldest living opera singer turns 105 years old at Concord Place Retirement and Assisted Living Community, Northlake, IL

January 27th, 2010

Every morning, Lillian Krockenberger sings her favorite opera arias in German.  While that may not seem like a monumental accomplishment, this opera soprano turns 105 years old on Feb 3, 2010.

Lillian was born in Germany in 1905.  An orphan, she came to Chicago, Illinois in 1921 and worked as a maid and caregiver for a wealthy family.  That’s when she met her husband, Carl.  “He saw me through the front window of the home I was working at.  It was love at first sight,”  said Lillian.

During Lillian and Carl’s marriage, they had two children together, Carl Jr. and Lydia, and four grandchildren.  Though Lillian’s husband and two children have since passed on, her four grandchildren remain a big part of her life.

Lillian’s husband, also a musician, played piano and violin.  Together they enjoyed careers as entertainers in the Chicago area.

For the past 20 years, Lillian has lived in the Chicago suburb of Northlake at Concord Place Retirement and Assisted Living Community (http://www.concordplace.com). Concord Place Executive Director, Colleen Bottens said that “Lillian’s joyous song is a gift to residence and staff alike.”  Lillian remains fiercely independent and sings every day.  “The secret to a long life is to be happy and consider each day a gift,”  said Lillian.

On Saturday, January 30, 2010, Concord Place is throwing Lillian a 105th birthday party.  She will be joined by her Concord Place friends, 20 family members and the Mayor of Northlake, IL, Jeffrey Sherwin.

People Recovery Services Announces New Personal Injury and Workers Comp Website

July 14th, 2009

Northbrook, IL based People Recovery Services has announced the launch of its website http://www.PeopleRecovery.com.  The website is to be used by people who are injured at work or hurt in a car accident to gather information about the legal, medical and financial options that are available to them.

“Many people don’t know that in the state of Illinois, you have the right to the opinion of two doctors in addition to any physician provided by your employer before they can send you back to work, and you have up to two years to get treatment,” said a People Recovery spokesperson.  ”Many people out there are being sent back to work when they are still injured,” she added.

People Recovery Services offers its clients a free referral service to doctors and personal injury or workers compensation lawyers in their area, in addition to financial assistance to clients with pending cases. Insurance is not required for those seeking medical assistance.

The doctors and lawyers in the People Recovery network offer a free initial consultation, and the client pays nothing unless their case is won.  The client never pays anything to People Recovery Services, and People Recovery takes no referral fee in any case.

“We wanted to partner with a financial services company in order to give financial options to the clients we help.  Many of our clients don’t have the resources to wait out the results of a personal injury case.  That means that they might end up settling for much less than they would get than if they had waited out the process.  Our lending partner provides a loan on the pending settlement.   That gives the client the ability to pay rent, pay medical bills and just live:  things that many of use take for granted.  The best part, the client doesn’t have to pay the loan back if they don’t win their pending case! That’s right, if the case is lost, the client is released from any obligation to pay back the loan,”  said the spokesperson.
